Reinforcement actions for two threatened species in Elaphonisi (Crete)

Elaphonisi is a protected area on the island of Crete, hosting many endemic and rare plant species, and is included in the Natura 2000 network. However, being also one of the most famous touristic attractions in Crete, it is visited by thousands of tourists every year. During the past years, recreational activities have exerted a lot of pressure on the local habitats. As a result of this intensive touristic development, four plant taxa of the area were added to the IUCN List of Rare and Threatened Plants of Greece.

Within the framework of the CARE-MEDIFLORA project, reinforcement actions were planned for 4 threatened species, naturally occurring in the area.

Conservation action for yellow gentian in Sardinia

The CARE-MEDIFLORA team in Sardinia (Hortus Botanicus Karalitanus, HBK partner) started their first CARE-MEDIFLORA in situ conservation action, which consisted in a translocation of yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea L. subsp. lutea).

Planning of conservation actions for Peganum harmala in Cyprus

On 25 November 2016 the CARE-MEDIFLORA team in Cyprus held a meeting with the Municipality of Nicosia, the Department of Environment (Governmental organization - Competent authority of Cyprus for CBD and NATURA 2000 network) and the Department of Antiquities (Governmental organization) for planning the in situ conservation actions for Peganum harmala around the medieval walls of Nicosia.

Presentation of CARE-MEDIFLORA project in Cagliari

The CARE-MEDIFLORA project was presented during the Meeting on the Italian Botanical and Historical Gardens which took place in Cagliari on 14 November 2016. The Meeting was a part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Hortus Botanicus Karalitanus foundation.
