Sóller Botanical Garden Foundation (JBS) is responsible for all actions in the Balearic Islands.
JBS is a Foundation dedicated to the conservation of Balearic Islands flora, research in conservation biology and education. The JBS is supported by the Balearic Islands Government, the Mallorca Council, the Sóller Town Council, the Balearic Islands University and a private bank “BMN-Sa Nostra”.
JBS works close to the Balearic Government in the in situ plant conservation plant programmes. The Seedbank was established in 1989 to improve the integrated in situ-ex situ conservation plans of Balearic flora, especially those endangered and/or endemic/rare taxa from Balearics and phytogeographical related taxa and as well as to conserve the Balearic ancient crop varieties of cereals and vegetables. The Herbarium (HJBS) hosts two historical collections (Bonafe and Bianor) and the modern collection since the 1980s. The Botanic Garden was founded in 1984 and opened to the public in 1992. It hosts the biggest and the most complete living plant collection of the Balearic Islands. It has more than 25,000 visitors per year of which about 6,000 are students.
The JBS has been involved in some internationals projects: GENMEDOC (Interreg IIB Medocc, 2004-2006), SEMCLIMED (Interreg IIIB Medocc, 2006-2008), ENSCONET (2005-2009), and “Ensuring the survival of endangered plants in the Mediterranean” (2011-2014) funded by the MAVA Foundation.
