The CARE-MEDIFLORA team in Corsica for their first joint field trip

15 September 2016

Thumb field trip

The first joint field trip of the CARE-MEDIFLORA project took place in Corsica from 12 to 15 July 2016.

The team met in Corte on July 12 to attend a conference in tribute to the famous Catalan botanist Jacques Gamisans, who died in September 2015 and had studied the flora and vegetation of Corsica for almost 50 years.

This conference was an opportunity to present at the University of Corsica the national and international works of many local scientists, including the work of some partners of the CARE-MEDIFLORA project -Gianluigi Bacchetta (Sardinia), Josep Lluis Gradaille (Balearic Islands)- and during the second day, to discover the scenery and the history of a region of Corsica: Castagniccia.

The day of 14 July was especially devoted to the CARE-MEDIFLORA project. The group travelled to the far south of Corsica, Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio. The visit of several coastal sites allowed sharing experiences on problems common to the Mediterranean islands, as for example the degradation of species populations and coastal habitats due in part to excessive tourism development. The topics discussed focused on the in situ conservation of threatened plant species and the restoration of sand dune habitats. Several types of actions were demonstrated, including the results of the implementation of regulatory protection measures (creation of the Nature Reserve of Bonifacio) and / or land property changes (purchase of sites by the ‘Conservatoire du Littoral’ of Corsica), protection from grazing and other management measures implemented on the sites. The results of the translocation procedure were also analysed. Finally, the team carried out seed collection from endangered species, such as Armeria pungens (Link) Hoffmanns. & Link and Anthyllis barba-jovis L., from several stands in order to have wide representation of the genetic diversity of the species and allow the production of seedlings for future translocation operations. The day of 15 July was devoted to an internal meeting among the partners of the CARE-MEDIFLORA project.
